As military veterans and patriotic Americans, we are pleased to see an outstanding veteran nominated to lead the Department of Defense. Hegseth is a decorated combat veteran who served as an Infantry Officer in the Army National Guard, deploying overseas to combat zones in Iraq and Afghanistan, earning two Bronze Stars and a Combat Infantryman Badge. 

Since then, he has worked tirelessly to support American troops and is committed to rebuilding the American military into a fighting force that is capable of defending the national security interests of the American people.

That rebuilding begins with depoliticizing the military. As Hegseth demonstrates in his latest book, The War on Warriors, today the Left forces DEI policies on our troops, distracting from the core mission of protecting the American people and spreading toxic and divisive ideologies among the ranks. Hegseth understands these problems and as Secretary of Defense will be well-placed to confront them head on. 

But ending wokeness is just the start. The Pentagon is also bloated with bureaucracy and waste. The defense industrial base is failing to deliver. Cost overruns and delays have become the norm. The Department of Defense needs a Secretary of Defense willing to confront both the entrenched bureaucracy and the defense industry and force them to deliver the ships, planes, and munitions our troops need to confront America’s adversaries.

America’s number one adversary is the People’s Republic of China. Hegseth has spoken at length on the need to rebuild and reorient the U.S. military for great power competition with China, which is engaged in a massive conventional and nuclear military buildup. At the same time, China is working to weaken the United States from within, exporting fentanyl to Mexico that cartels traffic into the United States, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Americans.
