WASHINGTON—The Heritage Foundation Center for Education Policy research fellow Jason Bedrick released the following statement after North Carolina lawmakers passed a budget that expands eligibility for the state’s Opportunity Scholarships to all K-12 students:
“North Carolina legislators deserve great credit for listening to parents who have been clamoring for more education options. Now, all North Carolina families will be able to access Opportunity Scholarships and choose the learning environments that align with their values and work best for their children.
“North Carolina is the ninth state to offer school choice to all K-12 students. This growing trend of states advancing universal education choice policies puts families in charge of their children’s learning.”
Notably, the budget passed with enough votes to override an expected veto from North Carolina’s Democratic Governor, Roy Cooper.
