Washington, D.C—Today, President Trump announced an agreement removing the Section 232 steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada and Mexico, as well as subsequent removal of retaliatory tariffs levied against the United States. Heritage Foundation trade economist, Tori Whiting, released the following statement:
U.S. trade policy should allow American businesses and families the freedom to buy and sell as they wish. President Trump’s agreement to remove tariffs imposed on Mexico and Canada relieves the American people of a tax-burden that should not have been in place. This is a positive step toward eliminating these unjust barriers and President Trump should use this as an opportunity to remove the remaining tariffs, especially those on U.S. allies.
