The freedom of the press is a cornerstone of our republic. As conceived of by the Framers of the Constitution, this freedom would permit the press to defend republicanism, spread enlightenment, and check governmental corruption. Yet our press rarely behaves in this way. Rather than bolstering republicanism, many today – including President Trump – accuse it of spreading fake news, promoting its own interests by crushing dissenters, and protecting the nation’s elite class.
