WASHINGTON—Mike Gonzalez, Heritage Foundation senior fellow in the Douglas and Sarah Allison Center for Foreign Policy, released a new book Tuesday on the rise of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) organizations, and the radical, Marxist-inspired leaders behind them.
“BLM: The Making of a New Marxist Revolution” examines who these leaders and activists are, delving into their backgrounds and exposing their agendas. It demonstrates how their top leaders are avowed Marxists who want to dismantle our Constitution, our social institutions, and our very way of life. In pursuit of these aims, they and their willing fellow activists make savvy use of social media to spread their message and organize marches, sit-ins, statue-tumblings, and riots. And in 2020, they seized upon the video showing George Floyd’s suffering to unleash a nationwide insurgency.
In the book, Gonzalez shows how the riots and protests that rocked American society after Floyd’s death were not spontaneous events. Indeed, the 12,000+ demonstrations and 633 riots that followed Floyd’s death took organizational muscle and ideological commitment. Both were readily supplied by the various Black Lives Matter organizations.

Gonzalez, a journalist for two decades, a former speechwriter in the Bush administration, and an expert on socialism and identity politics, has been at The Heritage Foundation since 2009, where he now writes on critical race theory, national identity, diversity, multiculturalism, assimilation, and nationalism, as well as a broad variety of foreign policy matters. He is also the author of the highly acclaimed book, “The Plot to Change America,” published in 2020. He also uncovered links between the Chinese Communist Party and BLM last summer, and has conducted more than 300 broadcast interviews since 2020 on a range of issues, including BLM, critical race theory, socialism, Cuba, and identity politics.
